Be Explosive, Not Just Strong
For specialists, strength matters. But the weight on the bar means very little if the athlete cannot move with speed, control, and freedom.
Train the power the position can use
There is a version of strength training that looks impressive on social media.
Load the bar.
Set the camera.
Take a few steps back.
Lower the body just far enough to say the rep happened, stand it up, and post the number.
The weight is heavy. The music is loud. The caption usually says something about power.
But specialists do not earn points for the amount of weight they can place on their backs.
They have to use their strength.
A kicker has to create force through a fast, coordinated movement and remain balanced enough to finish it. A punter has to move smoothly through the catch, drop, and swing while controlling his body through space. A long snapper has to produce speed from a compressed position, deliver the ball accurately, and then become part of the play.
The position does not ask who lifted the most.
It asks who can apply force quickly, efficiently, and repeatedly.
That is the difference between being strong and being explosive.
The Number Is Not the Athlete
When I began training my son, the goal was never to turn him into the strongest athlete in the weight room.
He needed strength. Every athlete does.
But the strength had to serve something.
It had to help him sprint faster, jump higher, remain stable on one leg, move freely through his hips, and create force without losing control of the movement. It had to support the work he was doing with his position coaches rather than compete with it.
There were no points awarded because he could lift more than another kicker.
The proof had to show up when he moved.
That changed how I viewed the weight room.
A bigger squat did not automatically mean a more powerful swing. More muscle did not automatically create more distance. Heavy lifting could build a foundation, but it could not be the entire plan.
Specialists sometimes chase strength because it is easy to measure.
The bar weighs what it weighs. The plates are visible. The number can be compared. Progress appears clean and objective.
Explosiveness is harder to package.
It shows up in how quickly an athlete leaves the ground. It appears in the first few steps of a sprint, the speed of a movement, the control of a landing, and the ability to transfer force through the entire body.
It is not always accompanied by a dramatic number.
But the position can feel the difference.
Power Has to Move
Strength is the ability to produce force.
Power is the ability to produce that force quickly.
For a specialist, that distinction matters because the movement does not unfold slowly.
The athlete does not have unlimited time to push against the ground, organize his body, and create force. The action happens quickly. The pieces have to work together.
That requires more than strong legs.
The hips have to move.
The trunk has to control rotation.
The athlete has to remain stable while force travels through one side of the body.
The nervous system has to organize the movement at speed.
The body has to reach the positions required by the skill without fighting against its own restrictions.
That is why specialists cannot separate strength from mobility, speed, coordination, and balance.
An athlete can become stronger while becoming less capable of using that strength for his position.
He can add weight to the bar while losing range of motion.
He can build muscle while moving more slowly.
He can become impressive in the gym while feeling heavy on the field.
That does not make strength training the problem.
It means the training has lost sight of its purpose.

Stop Training for the Camera
The weight room can become its own competition.
Athletes see what others are posting. Parents see the videos. Numbers begin to carry meaning far beyond what they actually tell us.
A heavy lift can be useful.
It can also be shortened, rushed, poorly controlled, or performed only because the camera is recording.
Partial movement is not automatically useless. Different ranges and variations can have a legitimate place in a well-designed program.
But that is different from loading weight an athlete cannot control, cutting the movement down to survive the rep, and presenting it as proof that more power is coming.
The body knows the difference even when social media does not.
A specialist should not have to sacrifice movement quality to win an online strength contest nobody asked him to enter.
The bar should not dictate the rep.
The athlete should own the weight.
That means controlling the movement, maintaining positions, and understanding why the exercise is part of the program. It means knowing whether the work is building strength, speed, stability, mobility, or the ability to absorb force.
Training should have a purpose beyond appearing difficult.
The camera does not need to be impressed.
The position needs to benefit.
Mobility Is Not the Opposite of Strength
Some athletes treat mobility as though it belongs to a different kind of training.
Strength is serious.
Mobility is something done on the floor after the real work is over.
But a specialist cannot use positions his body cannot reach.
The hips, ankles, hamstrings, trunk, and upper body all contribute to how force is created and transferred. When movement becomes limited, the body often finds another route.
Something opens early.
Something rotates farther than it should.
Another area absorbs stress it was not meant to carry.
That does not mean mobility is the answer to every technical problem. It is not. Position mechanics should remain with qualified specialist coaches.
It does mean that the athlete’s body must be capable of performing the movement those coaches are teaching.
Strength without usable movement can become a restriction.
Flexibility without stability can leave the athlete unable to control the range he has.
The two have to develop together.
The goal is not simply to become more flexible. It is to create the range the athlete needs and then develop enough strength and control to use it.
That is athletic movement.
Speed Changes Strength
There is another reason the weight room cannot become the entire identity of the training program.
Specialists need to move fast.
Sprinting teaches the body to produce force quickly. Jumping asks the athlete to create power and control the landing. Throws can teach rapid force production through the hips and trunk. Single-leg work can expose the balance and stability that two-leg movements sometimes hide.
None of those replaces position training.
They prepare the athlete to bring more physical ability into it.
The specialist still has to kick, punt, or snap. He still needs qualified instruction. He still has to repeat the technical movement enough to make it reliable.
But the quality of the athlete changes what he can bring to that instruction.
A stronger athlete may have a larger foundation.
A faster and more explosive athlete may be able to access that strength when the movement demands it.
The difference is not cosmetic.
It is usable.
Build What the Rep Requires
There is no single exercise that creates a powerful specialist.
No squat variation guarantees more distance.
No stretch fixes every restriction.
No sprint program replaces thousands of intentional position reps.
The work has to fit together.
Strength provides a foundation.
Speed teaches the body to apply force quickly.
Mobility creates access to movement.
Stability helps control it.
Recovery allows the athlete to repeat the work without constantly operating in a fatigued state.
Technical coaching turns those physical qualities toward the position.
That is why the training cannot be built around one number.
The specialist is not a squat.
He is not a vertical jump.
He is not a forty time.
He is an athlete trying to coordinate several physical qualities inside one demanding movement.
The weight room should help him do that.
It should not become another place where he feels pressure to perform for everyone watching.
Final Word
Strength matters.
It can help create the foundation for power, protect the body, and give the athlete more physical capacity.
But specialists do not need strength they cannot use.
They need to move.
They need to create force quickly.
They need enough mobility to reach the positions the skill demands and enough stability to control those positions.
They need to remain athletic while becoming stronger.
So load the bar.
Train hard.
Build real strength.
But control the weight, complete the work with purpose, and remember what the training is supposed to serve.
The goal is not to look powerful for one video.
The goal is to become explosive when the moment arrives.
